Gary Bernstein for U.S. Senate “Contract for Success” Gary Bernstein invites all Nevada citizens - business professionals, students, educators, working men and women - across the state to participate in “Community Summits for Success” and ensure their voices are heard. The meetings, which invite all Nevadans to express their ideas, are focused on working with business executives around the state to develop ways to bring more jobs to Nevada and restore the faith and the trust of all Nevadans in their government.      Job Creation.  We need to get back to basics for Nevadans... create new jobs… and a diversified business environment that makes those jobs happen. I will lead the charge to attract and retain new jobs and careers to Nevada by bringing in new businesses. This will restore the economic prosperity needed to put our fellow Nevadans back to work.  In addition, I will fight for projects now being considered, such as a new rail system between California and Nevada, which will result in thousands of new employment opportunities. As your Nevada U.S. Senator, I will also work to attract new industries, such as wind and solar energy, to diversify our economy and assuming its economically feasible it today’s financial world.  I also believe that we can revitalize the “American Dream” for Nevadans by providing small business tax incentives and capital gains cuts to stimulate the economy.  We must remove the government restrictions that prevent small business owners from creating jobs and employing people and support aggressive trade strategies that open markets and create jobs.       Break the Gridlock in Washington, D.C.   I will reach across both sides of the aisle in the U.S. Senate to pass legislation that will improve the lives of Nevada citizens and help Nevada’s economy.  Our nation’s citizens are tired of the gridlock in Washington, D.C.  I’m a business man in a political arena trying to make a difference, not a career politician.  Nevadans deserve a U.S. Senator whose first loyalty is to his constituents. I am very passionate about offering a fresh bi-partisan perspective which focuses on making winning decisions for Nevadans and all the American people, not taking care of special interest groups or Washington bureaucrats.       Health Care. As your Republican Senator, I will make it a top priority to define what is really in store for Nevadans in the recently passed health care bill.  While our country has the best health care system in the world, that system is broken and needs repair.  Real health care reform should offer the best possible care and increase choices without bankrupting our country.  I believe all Americans should have access to quality, affordable health care and should be able to keep their insurance when they change jobs. In addition, I believe individuals should be allowed to purchase insurance across state lines, which would increase competition and drive down costs.  We should also implement tort reform to put a cap on damages for medical malpractice lawsuits.  This would encourage doctors to prescribe testing for patients that is needed, not to call for excessive tests to protect themselves from lawsuits.       Improve Education.  I am committed to working to improve education; our children are our future leaders.  We must ensure Nevada’s children have the education they need to compete in the global economy.  We must address the education crisis and take steps to modernize Nevada schools with updated technology.  In addition, because education is so closely tied to economic development, we must ensure, that through education, Nevada develops a diversified labor pool that will attract and retain new businesses.  We also need to work to keep higher education costs more affordable for our students.       Keep Our People In Their Homes ... Address the Foreclosure Crisis. Right now Nevada ranks as the #1 foreclosure state in the nation and has a 13% reported unemployment rate, one of the highest in the nation. Our recovery depends on bringing stability back to the housing market and bringing in more jobs to generate prosperity.  As your U.S. Senator, I will make sure the banks keep their promises to help Nevada citizens save their homes and restore Nevada’s economy.  I will also work to stop the exodus of jobs and people who can’t make a living in Nevada by bringing in new jobs and making strategic alliances with business partners across the country.       Veterans.   I am very proud of our country and all of our men and women in uniform.  We need to honor all servicemen and women, who protect and defend our freedoms around the world, by ensuring they and their families receive the pay, health care and benefits that they deserve.  Because of their service to our country, I personally believe that it is a great tragedy for any member of the U.S. Armed Forces, who is serving or has served, or their families to have to use food stamps or borrow money from loan sharks to make it from one payday to the next or to be homeless.  When I am elected as your U.S. Senator, I will address these issues. I will also propose legislation to stop negative amortization payment plans from the Internal Revenue Service for men and women in the Armed Forces and legislation to make the government responsible for providing replacement limbs with the most current technology free of charge to all military personnel who lose a limb while serving our country.  We must ensure we are honoring the promises made to our Veterans.       Strong Alliance with Israel.  I strongly support maintaining the U.S. strategic alliance with Israel that is so critical to the safety and national security of the United States and nations around the world.  As we continue to cultivate and evolve our partnership with Israel, we must, at the same time, encourage the appropriate Middle East countries to sit at the peace table and propose realistic ideas to achieve a lasting solution for peace. As long as we have an Administration that is willing to stand behind the interests of Israel and a U.S. Congress that is willing to sustain our valued relationship, terrorists and extremists will not prevail. As your U.S. Senator, I will work to ensure our relationship with Israel is secure and promote shared objectives, strategic goals and economic security between our nations.          Immigration. Immigration and Border Security.  I believe illegal immigration is a very serious problem.  We must protect our borders by enforcing our current federal laws to reduce the tide of illegal immigrants who slip into our state and country undetected.  We must modernize and reform our immigration system, so we can allow legal immigration to be more efficient.  We must also hold employers accountable who knowingly and willingly hire undocumented workers.        The 12-Year Rule.   I strongly believe that U.S. Senators and U.S. Representatives should serve no more than 12 consecutive years in either the U.S. Senate or the House. I also encourage Nevada citizens and voters across America to replace career politicians with citizen legislators in 2010. Vote in citizen legislators who are stewards of the people’s money and rights. Vote in citizen legislators who put people first and politics second.  In addition, I suggest that we expand the current U.S. Representative term of two years to four years so our legislators can better serve the American people.            Pledge to Not Campaign for 5 Years After I Earn Your Vote.  I strongly disagree with the current practice on Capitol Hill of elected officials beginning to campaign for their next election as soon as they come into office.  No wonder people say the system is broken.  No wonder people are fed up with politicians. Many members of Congress have forgotten they were elected “of the people, by the people and for the people,” and they work instead for the special interests and friends who supported their election. If I am privileged to be sent to Washington, D.C. as your U.S. Senator from the Great State of Nevada, I pledge to you that I will not start campaigning until I have served my constituents for five years, and I will not seek a second term unless I have demonstrated that I have successfully worked for you and deserve this privilege.
